Planting and Care of a Wildflower Meadow

Replacing a lawn or other single-species landscape with a meadow is one of the most rewarding ways to increase biodiversity in your yard. A thoughtfully designed meadow provides food and shelter for pollinators, beneficial insects, birds, and many other small members of the local food chain.
Depending on the site, a meadow can also improve water infiltration, reduce erosion, and require fewer long-term inputs than a traditional lawn. If meadows are so beneficial, why doesn’t everyone simply scatter a packet of wildflower seed and wait for nature to take over? Our Master Gardener colleagues, CeCe Fitton, Nancy Kohn, Lorraine Eckard, and Niki Kobes, will answer that question and many more based on their experience developing the Woodcock Garden Meadow.
A meadow is generally defined as an area dominated by grasses, wildflowers, and other nonwoody plants, with grasses making up the majority of the planting. Many native-style meadows contain approximately 60 percent grasses, with the remaining plants consisting of flowering perennials and other herbaceous species.
Come on out to Woodcock on Saturday, September 19, starting at 10 a.m. and take the first step in creating a meadow. Although meadows may appear wild and natural, successful ones are thoughtfully managed, especially during the first few years.
