SUMMARY:Berries: Growing Raspberries in the Home Garden (Class)
DESCRIPTION:Few garden pleasures compare to picking sun-warmed raspberries straight from the home garden. Their flavor\, fragrance\, and sweetness far surpass anything available in the grocery store. On Saturday\, August 29\, 2026\, gardeners are invited to discover how to successfully grow these popular berries at a free educational program\, “Growing Raspberries in the Home Garden.” \n\n\n\nThe class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dungeness River Nature Center\, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road\, Sequim\, WA 98382. \n\n\n\nPresented by veteran Clallam County Master Gardener and berry enthusiast Jeanette Stehr-Green\, this engaging program will cover all the essentials for establishing and maintaining a productive raspberry patch. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe life cycle of a raspberry plant and how fruit is produced\n\n\n\nThe differences between summer-bearing and fall-bearing (everbearing) raspberries\n\n\n\nHow to prepare an ideal planting site with proper soil\, drainage\, and sun exposure\n\n\n\nSeasonal care\, including watering\, fertilizing\, mulching\, and weed control\n\n\n\nProper pruning and trellising techniques to maximize yield and plant health\n\n\n\n\nRaspberries are well adapted to the north Olympic Peninsula and can provide years of harvest when planted in the right location and cared for properly. This class will help both beginning and experienced gardeners understand how to avoid common mistakes and enjoy larger\, tastier crops. \n\n\n\nThe Homegrown Berry Series is offered by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, who provide research-based gardening education to the public. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free and open to all. \n\n\n\nRegistration is not required but helpful to ensure accommodation for all attendees. Sweet\, fragrant\, and bursting with flavor\, homegrown strawberries are one of theeasiest and most rewarding fruits for gardeners to grow. \n\n\n\nIn this informative and practical class\, longtime Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will explain how to select the best strawberry varieties\, choose the ideal planting location\, and properly plant and space strawberries for maximum production. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe differences between June-bearing\, everbearing\, and day-neutral strawberries\n\n\n\nHow to choose varieties for a continuous harvest throughout the summer\n\n\n\nBest practices for planting and spacing strawberries\n\n\n\nSeasonal care and maintenance\n\n\n\nHow to renovate June-bearing strawberry beds after harvest\n\n\n\nWinter protection strategies\n\n\n\nWhen and how to replace older\, less productive plantings\n\n\n\n\nStrawberries are an excellent crop for home gardeners because they require relatively little space\, produce fruit quickly\, and can thrive for several years when properly cared for. By following the techniques presented in this class\, gardeners can reduce disease problems\, increase yields\, and enjoy fresh berries at the peak of ripeness and flavor. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nJeanette Stehr-Green has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003 and is a respected gardening educator\, newspaper columnist\, and frequent speaker. She was named Clallam County Master Gardener of the Year in 2012\, has achieved Lifetime Achievement statuswith the Clallam County Master Gardeners\, and is a recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. \n\n\n\nA passionate berry enthusiast\, Jeanette has extensive experience growing berries in the unique conditions of the North Olympic Peninsula and enjoys sharing her knowledge with local gardeners. \n\n\n\nAbout the Homegrown Berry Series\n\n\n\nThis training session is part of the monthly 2026 Clallam County Master Gardener Homegrown Berries Series that runs through October 24.
