SUMMARY:Orchard Planning and Management on the Olympic Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Can we imagine a greater joy than watching our garden plants progress through the growing season to that moment when the first beautiful “fruit” of our labors is hanging there waiting to be picked?  \n\n\n\nOr\, is our greatest moment of bliss when we bring to the dinner table one of the delicious recipes we have produced from our garden endeavors?  A-a-a-h-h. \n\n\n\nBut we’re in June\, and we all know those joyful harvests will only come with lots of know-how\, planning\, and hard work.  \n\n\n\nIf your goals include a bountiful harvest from fruit trees\, join Master Gardener Tom del Hotal at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden on Saturday\, June 20\, from 10-11:30 a.m. for a dynamic overview on Orchard Planning and Management on the Olympic Peninsula.  Tom will share essential “how-to” guidance from his 40 years’ experience in growing fruit trees\, and whether you have one tree or a small orchard\, this session will provide participants a sound foundation for getting the best fruit from your tree or orchard. \n\n\n\nOptimizing your fruit harvest starts with careful planning.  Tom will outline how to select the best fruit types and varieties for your property and your family\, choose planting options\, and identify and prepare the planting site.  \n\n\n\nThe session also will address the best practices for year-round care of your fruit trees\, including watering\, fertilizing\, pest management\, and pruning. Together\, these skills\, applied timely\, will contribute to the likelihood of harvesting a bounty of delicious\, nutritious fruit. \n\n\n\nTom began his career as a horticulturist and nurseryman in 1977 and was a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers for over 40 years.  Complementing his work in retail garden centers\, Tom owned and operated part-time a fruit tree specialty nursery and consulting business\, Fantasia Gardens\, providing orchard design and fruit tree management services to homeowners and small-scale commercial orchards. A Certified Arborist and a member of the International Plant Propagators Society\, Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and four advanced certifications from the California Association of Nursery and Garden Centers.Tom also served as a part-time college instructor in horticulture for over 20 years and recently celebrated his 5th anniversary as a Clallam County Master Gardener where he is the co-team leader of the fruit tree orchard at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden. He also is president of The Olympic Orchard Society. \n\n\n\nThe goal for Orchard Planning and Management on the Olympic Peninsula is to provide participants an understanding of the key components in the lifelong care of a productive fruit tree to build their confidence\, whether working independently or hiring a professional.  \n\n\n\nMG Digging Deeper presentations are free\, open to all\, no registration required. Feel free to bring an interested friend or neighbor. Presentations are outdoors\, so dress for the weather.

SUMMARY:Save Water with Drip Irrigation
DESCRIPTION:Water is as crucial to your garden as soil and sunshine. Now\, as the dry season begins on the Olympic Peninsula\, it’s an ideal time to think about installing drip irrigation. \n\n\n\nBy incorporating drip irrigation into your water-efficient plan\, you can ensure that your plants receive the water they need in a gradual and controlled manner. This approach not only maintains the greenery of your garden but also helps conserve a precious resource. \n\n\n\nDrip irrigation\, with timers\, filters\, and pressure regulators\, etc.\, may seem intimidating\, but it is not complicated! Simple drip can be a very simple hose-end DIY project. No super fancy tools\, plumbing skills\, or higher math skills are required. Once you see a simple system put together\, you’ll be ready to go. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this presentation is to demystify drip systems for the DIY homeowner. The workshop will begin with guidance on planning a simple system and then demonstrate the assembly of major components and the selection of emitters. \n\n\n\nThe final half hour of the workshop will be dedicated to small group work with a Master Gardener\, where participants can collaborate to set up a basic system. There are numerous reasons why a simple drip system is an excellent water plan. Saving water is just one of them. Saving time\, reducing disease\, and growing happier plants are three more reasons that any gardener can appreciate. Advancements in drip irrigation technology have actually made DIY projects much less expensive and easier to understand. Attendees will be able to examine the easy-to-assemble (just screw them together) components and be ready to make informed decisions.

SUMMARY:Pruning: How\, Where and Why?
DESCRIPTION:To prune or not to prune . . . and how? . . . when? . . . where? \n\n\n\nWe’ve all encountered varied guidance over the years\, but somehow\, when we stand before our plant with amputation tools in hand\, our hearts start to race\, our knees to tremble\, and our minds question: “what’s really best for this plant?” \n\n\n\nGardeners wishing to enhance their pruning knowledge and techniques are invited to the  “Digging Deeper” presentation Pruning: How\, Where and Why\, hosted by the WSU Master Gardener Program on Saturday\, May 23\, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden located at 2711 Woodcock Road\, Sequim. \n\n\n\nLed by veteran Master Gardener Keith Dekker\, the session will untangle the mysteries of Why\, How\, When\, and Where to prune different types of plants.  Drawing on science-based knowledge and 35 years of experience\, Keith will outline rules and methods (illuminated by drawings\, photos and live examples) to explain key variables in each ‘to prune or not’ situation.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to construct a pruning plan for any plant before touching a tool\, and which type of pruning cut (and associated tool) is appropriate for different areas on your plants.   Keith will review common pruning mistakes\, how to avoid them\, and how to use pruning to “renovate” a plant suffering from pruning mistakes (including long deferred pruning). \n\n\n\nThe Goal of this Digging Deeper session is for participants to leave with WSU-recommended and Master Gardener proven techniques that will foster the health and beauty of your garden.

SUMMARY:Growing Tomatoes Well on the North Olympic Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever coaxed along a tomato plant only to end the season with a handful of green fruit\, you’re not alone. Tomatoes love heat\, and\, as we all know\, here on the Olympic Peninsula\, that can be in short supply. \n\n\n\nGardeners eager to improve their tomato harvest are invited to a special “Digging Deeper” presentation hosted by the WSU Master Gardener Program. Growing Tomatoes Well on the Olympic Peninsula will be held Saturday\, May 16\, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden located at 2711 Woodcock Road\, Sequim. \n\n\n\nDuring this informative session\, veteran Clallam County Master Gardeners Betsy Burlingame\, Dave Eberle\, Nancy Kohn\, Laurel Moulton\, David Rambin\, Jeanette Stehr-Green\, and Audreen Williams will share proven strategies for success. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn which tomato varieties perform best locally\, how to plant for heat capture\, and how to care for plants throughout the season. The presentation will also explore the advantages and challenges of growing tomatoes in greenhouses and hoop houses.  \n\n\n\nSmall group demonstrations will cover planting and pruning techniques\, trellising\, season extenders\, and how to identify and manage common tomato problems. \n\n\n\nDrawing on years of hands-on experience growing tomatoes in Clallam County\, the Master Gardeners will offer practical\, research-based guidance tailored to local conditions. The Goal is that participants will leave with WSU-recommended and Master Gardener proven techniques to help produce reliable\, vine-ripened tomatoes at home.

She has done extensive research on fall/winter gardening practices\, along with trial-and-error experimental gardening\, and is looking forward to sharing her experiences. \n\n\n\nPam is a past Kootenai County\, Idaho Master Gardener and a current Clallam County Master Gardener. Throughout the main growing season\, Pam is at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden in Sequim every Thursday morning where she oversees the Culinary Garden. When she is not at the Demonstration Garden\, you will find her in her home garden\, planting and harvesting all year long. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the scheduled educational presentation\, a team of Clallam County Master Gardeners will be available at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 26th to answer all gardening questions. SUMMARY:Growing Tomatoes Well Here
DESCRIPTION:Master Gardener Panel \n\n\n\nTomato lovers rejoice—you can\, indeed\, grow tomatoes well on the Olympic Peninsula! But there are things you need to know to get them growing and Clallam County Master Gardeners has you covered! Join veteran Master Gardeners Judy English\, Laurel Moulton\, David Rambin\, Jeanette Stehr-Green and Audreen Williams on Saturday\, May 17th from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Woodcock Demonstration Garden\, 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim for the Digging Deeper Saturdays presentation “Growing Tomatoes Well” and find out what it takes to grow terrific tomatoes. \n\n\n\nTomatoes are warmth-loving plants. Unfortunately\, our short growing season and cool temperatures can prevent tomato plants from setting fruit or keep fruit from ripening before the weather turns cold. Our Master Gardener panel has grown tomatoes for years in Clallam County and has confronted the many problems associated with this crop. They have experimented with many different approaches and have grown tomatoes in the ground\, in hoophouses and greenhouses\, and in containers. \n\n\n\nParticipants will find out what tomato varieties grow best in our area and how to plant tomatoes to optimize available heat. They will learn how to care for tomato plants through the growing season and about the benefits and challenges of growing tomatoes in a greenhouse or hoop house. The workshop will include demonstrations and displays on planting and pruning tomato bushes\, the use of season extenders and trellises and common tomato problems. In addition to the scheduled educational presentation\, a team of Clallam County Master Gardeners will be available at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 17th to answer all gardening questions. Digging Deeper attendees are encouraged to bring samples of garden problems or pests for diagnosis by Master Gardeners who can recommend control measures. \n\n\n\n“Growing Tomatoes Well” is part of the Digging Deeper Saturdays educational series which is free and open to the public.
