SUMMARY:Winter Care of Blue Orchard Mason Bee Cocoons: Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Shelly Deisch Master Gardener \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMason bee nesting season is over\, and October is the perfect time to take care of their cocoons to get them ready to over-winter. Get the info you need on how to take care of these precious pollinators this fall! Join Clallam County Master Gardener Shelly Deisch for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation\, “Winter Care of Blue Orchard Mason Bee Cocoons\, Part 2”—the final presentation on raising blue orchard mason bees. During the presentation\, Shelly will answer your mason bee care questions and discuss: \n\n\n\n• How and why to clean the cocoons.• How to put cocoons into cool storage until next spring.• What that “gunk” is that’s mixed in with the cocoons.• When to place cocoons outside to allow the adults to emerge and begin their life cycle once again. \n\n\n\nShelly is a 2023 graduate of the WSU Extension’s Clallam County Master Gardener Program. She is a retired wildlife biologist who moved to Port Angeles in 2022 with her husband\, Gary Brundige\, also a Master Gardener and wildlife biologist. Shelly’s passions for plants and critters have filled her interests since she was the little girl who “safely stored” earthworms in coat pockets when she found them on rainy days! While Shelly no longer “safely stores” earthworms\, she and Gary are transforming their urban yard into a pollinator-friendly habitat. \n\n\n\nThe Green Thumb Education Series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held in person typically on Thursdays from January through May\, and September through November. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Please visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/ for the latest information on upcoming presentations.

SUMMARY:How to Start and Care for a Wildflower Meadow
DESCRIPTION:CeCe Fitton & Nancy Kohn MGs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you miss our wildflower meadow presentation in September? Do not despair—you can still find out\, step by step\, how to create and maintain your own wildflower meadow! Join Clallam County Master Gardeners Cece Fitton\, Nancy Kohn and the Wildflower Meadow Team once again for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation\, “Planting and Care of a Wildflower Meadow\,” Thursday\, October 22nd at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms\, 308 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles from 1:00 – 2:15 p.m. \n\n\n\nReplacing a lawn or other single-species landscape with a meadow is one of the most rewarding ways to provide food and shelter for pollinators\, beneficial insects\, birds and many other small members of the local food chain. Depending on the site\, a meadow can also improve water flow\, reduce erosion and require fewer long-term inputs than a traditional lawn. So if meadows are so beneficial\, why doesn’t everyone simply scatter a packet of wildflower seed and wait for nature to take over? Our Master Gardeners will answer that question and many more based on their experience developing the Woodcock Garden and Arboretum Wildflower Meadow.
