She enjoys eating berries and teaching others about growing berries. She has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003. She writes gardening articles for local newspapers and participates in gardening programs on local radio stations. Jeanette was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year and has attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners. She received the National Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.  \n\n\n\nThe Green Thumb Education Series “Berry-licious: Selecting Berries for Your Home Garden” is an introduction to the upcoming 2026 Homegrown Berries Series. Join Clallam County Master Gardener Margery Whites for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “The History of Chocolate\,” Thursday\, November 13th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church\, 510 E. Park Avenue in Port Angeles. \n\n\n\nOur love affair with chocolate stretches back thousands of years to the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. Long before it became the sweet confection we know and adore\, chocolate went through many changes and iterations. This presentation will cover the origins of cacao versus where cacao is cultivated today\, various cacao species\, the mysteries of cacao pollination\, cacao cultivation and harvesting\, cacao usage by indigenous cultures of the Americas\, how the Europeans influenced cacao usage and climate change challenges. \n\n\n\nMargery has been a Master Gardener since 2016. She’s traveled extensively in Central America\, one of the cacao-producing regions of the world. Join WSU Clallam County Extension Regional Horticulture Specialist Laurel Moulton for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Garden Insects\,” Thursday\, October 9th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church\, 510 E. Park Avenue in Port Angeles. \n\n\n\nThe diversity of insects and related organisms in the garden can be mind boggling. It’s good to remember that most of them do useful things and will never become a pest. Come learn about the lives of some of the critters that you’ll recognize from your garden and some of them that you’ll want to go and find. Among others\, ground beetles\, praying mantids and millipedes will be discussed. Gardeners will come away from this presentation understanding a little more about the diversity of insects and related organisms in their garden. They will know where to look for insects\, how they interact and how to keep them around.Laurel has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and currently coordinates the Master Gardener Program in Clallam County. She acts as a regional integrated pest management specialist in Clallam\, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties. With 25 years in horticulture and botany\, she has educated home gardeners and small farms\, produced native plants for restoration\, and conducted research on ecosystems and agricultural systems. She loves insects and helping others love (or at least understand) them too. SUMMARY:Preserving the Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Carson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreserving food grown at home\, in season\, has long been a practice of food security and community. As gardeners\, farmers and homesteaders\, the abundance we harvest in the summer can last us through the winter months if we have the skills\, materials and space for preserving food. Join Washington State University Extension Program Coordinator Danielle Carson for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Preserving the Harvest\,” Thursday\, September 25th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church\, 510 E. Park Avenue in Port Angeles and find out how to make your harvest last all year long. \n\n\n\nAll gardeners and locavores know the overwhelming feeling in September when our gardens\, fruit trees and neighborhoods are lush with fruits and vegetables. This class is an overview of the many methods and resources that we can use\, from high-tech to low-tech (even no-tech!) to preserve the fruits of our labor! Participants will leave the class equipped with knowledge about food safety and a set of guidelines for extending nearly any fresh food item’s life span from fall through to the next harvest season. In a jam-packed two hours\, Danielle will give an overview of the history of food preservation\, food safety considerations for the gardener-turned-food preserver and preservation methods\, including fermentation\, canning\, dehydration\, pickling and more.Danielle is the Community Health Program Coordinator and Food Preservation Advisor for WSU Extension Clallam County\, as well as a hobby food preservationist. As a local sauerkraut maker\, she specializes in wild fermentation\, but advises the community on canning\, dehydration\, pickling\, and other types of food preservation. She has been growing and preserving food for a decade\, five seasons of which she has lived and farmed on the Olympic Peninsula. Danielle found her way into food preservation like many of us did: through a love for gardening and an appreciation for the seasonal abundances that Olympic Peninsula gardens\, farms and nature have to offer. DESCRIPTION:Ed Adams and Pam Pace\, Master Gardeners \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you want to up the wow factor of your flower garden\, nothing beats the show-stopping quality of a bed of a colorful dahlia bed. And there’s no better time to plan next summer’s stunning array of dahlias than right now. Join Clallam County Master Gardeners Pam Pace and Ed Adams at Woodcock Demonstration Garden\, 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim\, for the Digging Deeper Saturdays presentation “The World of Dahlias” to learn how to plant\, care for and enjoy these striking flowers. \n\n\n\nDuring their presentation\, Pam and Ed will show attendees how to select and identify dahlias and how to plant\, feed and water them. Attendees will also learn how to protect them from pests and viruses\, and how to harvest and store them properly. \n\n\n\nPam Pace is a past Kootenai County\, Idaho Master Gardener and a current 2023 Clallam County Master Gardener. During her lifelong gardening journey\, she has grown vegetables\, herbs\, fruits and flowers in five different planting zones. Pam’s favorite garden area is her cutting garden\, filled with an ever-changing variety of annual flowers such as snap dragons\, sunflowers and cosmos along with perennials including peonies\, roses and her most favorite\, dahlias. She combines her love of dahlias and her knowledge of gardening for this Digging Deeper Presentation. \n\n\n\nEd says his dahlia ardor stems from his childhood. “My love of dahlias comes from my grandma and one of my sisters. A large portion of my grandma’s half-acre of ornamentals was dahlias. My garden at home includes a little over 600 dahlias\,” Ed said. Ed is a Master Gardener from the class of 2023. He has a large pollinating garden\, a home orchard\, a berry patch\, Japanese Maples\, as well as many ornamental plants. When he isn’t gardening on his 5 acres\, you can find Ed on the Olympic Discovery Trail walking his eight dogs. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the scheduled educational presentation\, a team of Clallam County Master Gardeners will be available at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on September 20th to answer all gardening questions. Digging Deeper attendees are encouraged to bring samples of garden problems or pests for diagnosis by Master Gardeners who can recommend control measures. \n\n\n\n“The World of Dahlias” is part of the Digging Deeper Saturdays educational series which is free and open to the public. This presentation will be held in-person\, rain or shine at the Master Gardener Woodcock Demonstration Garden. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 13\, from 10:00 -11:30 a.m.\, veteran Master Gardeners Audreen Williams\, Debra Roos\, Jan Bartron\, Kendra Waggoner\, Laurel Moulton and Laurie Force will combine efforts on the final garden walk of the 2025 season. Join them at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles to examine what is happening (or should be happening) in local vegetable gardens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt September’s final 2025 walk topics will include but not limited to: late summer/fall tomato care\, multiple aspects of saving seeds and using cover crops in the vegetable garden. Our final garden walk occurs rain or shine and is free and open to the public.  The Fifth Street Community Garden is located at 328 E Fifth Street in Port Angeles just off Peabody\, right across from City Hall. \n\n\n\nAt the August 9 walk veteran Master Gardener Jan Bartron described that the directly seeded squash plants in the Fifth Street Community Garden’s Food Bank plots had produced earlier than transplanted plants. Did you know transplanting can cause “transplant shock\,” where seedlings struggle to adapt to new conditions? This shock can delay growth and fruit production. In contrast\, directly seeded plants avoid this issue\, allowing them to grow more vigorously from the start and producing earlier.

The presentation will also cover how to use texture for maximum impact and how to think creatively when selecting foliage and other materials. \n\n\n\nSustainable ornamental gardening is simple and rewarding\, giving you more blooms\, healthier plants\, and longer-lasting arrangements. Learn when to harvest each flower type\, how to care for your blooms during cutting\, and how to prepare them for stunning displays. Pick up insider florist tips for extending vase life and discover tricks to get the most from every bouquet. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will be held at Woodcock Demonstration Garden (2711 Woodcock Rd\, Sequim) on August 2\, from 10:30 – 12:00pm. There is a $15.00 registration fee that goes towards a floral container\, mechanics for creating a bouquet and flowers. Join Clallam County Master Gardener Pam Pace at Woodcock Demonstration Garden\, 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim\, for the Digging Deeper Saturdays presentation “Planning Your Fall/Winter Garden” to learn the tips and tricks for successful fall/winter gardening. \n\n\n\nDuring her presentation\, Pam will discuss the difference between fall/winter harvest crops and spring/overwintering crops and the advantages of growing both. She will also talk about the importance of timing when planting\, as well as the benefits of succession planting. \n\n\n\n“Year-round gardening and harvesting have become a personal goal and something that I’m very passionate about\,” Pam said. She has done extensive research on fall/winter gardening practices\, along with trial-and-error experimental gardening\, and is looking forward to sharing her experiences. \n\n\n\nPam is a past Kootenai County\, Idaho Master Gardener and a current Clallam County Master Gardener. During her lifelong gardening journey\, she has grown vegetables\, herbs\, fruits and flowers in six different planting zones. She is now thrilled to be gardening on the North Olympic Peninsula with all the challenges and joys it has to offer. Pam and her husband moved to the area five years ago and were excited about exploring the prospect of year-long gardening in a temperate climate. With a long growing season and milder winters\, the opportunity to harvest twelve months out of the year was intriguing and has become a personal challenge. Throughout the main growing season\, Pam is at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden in Sequim every Thursday morning where she oversees the Culinary Garden.
