SUMMARY:Raised Bed Gardening
DESCRIPTION:So Many Advantages and Such Bounty!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaised beds can elevate your vegetable gardening to new levels (in so many ways!). \n\n\n\nAdvantages to growing vegetables in raised beds include better drainage\, warmer soil\, and easier access by the gardener. Another advantage is productivity – through better control of your growing environment\, your season’s results are often more bountiful and more delicious. Who can argue with that? \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, August 15th from 10-11:30 a.m. the Clallam County Master Gardeners will dive into the What\, How\, and WOW of Raised Bed Gardening at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden. This interactive learning opportunity is free to all members of our community. \n\n\n\nThe Raised Bed Gardening team has planned a dynamic experience\, beginning with a presentation and Q&A session addressing types of raised beds\, location and design considerations\, soil preparation\, watering\, mulches\, and various attachments for growing different types of vegetables. \n\n\n\nThe rest of the morning will take participants through the Woodcock raised bed gardens\, where mature produce and earlier-stage plantings are growing side-by-side in various types of framed raised beds and showcasing a range of trellises and season extenders. \n\n\n\nThe Master Gardeners Raised Bed team\, including David Rambin (Golden Trowel Recipient)\, Jennifer Blackwood\, Dave Eberle\, Kelly Pankau\, Diane Young\, and Tom Zingarelli\, have been working steadily to develop the raised bed gardens at Woodcock and are looking forward to sharing their experience with you. \n\n\n\nThe goal for Raised Bed Gardening is to bring participants greater knowledge to optimize the growth and productivity of their vegetable gardens for this season and the longer term\, and to build their confidence in approaching the task\, whether on their own or in hiring a professional. \n\n\n\nMG Digging Deeper presentations are free\, open to all\, no registration required\, so bring an interested friend or neighbor. Presentations are outdoors\, so dress for the weather.

DESCRIPTION:Few garden pleasures compare to picking sun-warmed raspberries straight from the home garden. Their flavor\, fragrance\, and sweetness far surpass anything available in the grocery store. On Saturday\, August 29\, 2026\, gardeners are invited to discover how to successfully grow these popular berries at a free educational program\, “Growing Raspberries in the Home Garden.” \n\n\n\nThe class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dungeness River Nature Center\, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road\, Sequim\, WA 98382. \n\n\n\nPresented by veteran Clallam County Master Gardener and berry enthusiast Jeanette Stehr-Green\, this engaging program will cover all the essentials for establishing and maintaining a productive raspberry patch. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe life cycle of a raspberry plant and how fruit is produced\n\n\n\nThe differences between summer-bearing and fall-bearing (everbearing) raspberries\n\n\n\nHow to prepare an ideal planting site with proper soil\, drainage\, and sun exposure\n\n\n\nSeasonal care\, including watering\, fertilizing\, mulching\, and weed control\n\n\n\nProper pruning and trellising techniques to maximize yield and plant health\n\n\n\n\nRaspberries are well adapted to the north Olympic Peninsula and can provide years of harvest when planted in the right location and cared for properly. This class will help both beginning and experienced gardeners understand how to avoid common mistakes and enjoy larger\, tastier crops. \n\n\n\nThe Homegrown Berry Series is offered by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, who provide research-based gardening education to the public. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free and open to all. \n\n\n\nRegistration is not required but helpful to ensure accommodation for all attendees. Find out how you can design your green spaces with native plants to create beautiful landscapes that help local wildlife thrive naturally. \n\n\n\nJoin botanist Dave Allen for a special two-hour evening Green Thumb Education Series presentation\, “Native Plants for Home Landscaping\,” Thursday\, September 10th\, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms\, 308 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles. During the presentation\, Dave will discuss: \n\n\n\n• Creating a habitat in your landscape• Site preparation and planning• Native garden maintenance• Uses of specific native species \n\n\n\nDave has worked in habitat restoration and native plant propagation for over 40 years in both California and Washington. He is a retired Olympic National Park botanist who led the Matt Albright Native Plant Center that helped develop and implement the revegetation portion of the Elwha River Restoration project\, as well as other revegetation projects within the park. Dave started Shore Road Nursery in 1990 and continues to provide local native plants to gardeners on the Olympic Peninsula. \n\n\n\nThe Green Thumb Education Series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held in person typically on Thursdays from January through May\, and September through November. DESCRIPTION:2026 will bring a growing season of a different emphasis for Clallam County Master Gardeners at the Fifth Street Community Garden. Starting April 11 various team members will be available to offer garden tours\, answer plant clinic questions\, and give timely gardening advice for Clallam County vegetable gardeners. \n\n\n\nGarden clinics will continue every second Saturday through September 12. They are free and open to the public from 10 -11:30 a.m. rain or shine. Each month will have a special timely focus and short program. This April please join the Master Gardeners as they collectively present “Let’s Get Growing: Soil and Seed Tips.”
