Integrated Pest Management (IPM) can help keep pests in check by reducing sources of food\, water and shelter and only using least-toxic pesticides when necessary. Find out how IPM can work for you! Join WSU Clallam County Extension Regional Horticulture Specialist Laurel Moulton for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Keep Pests at Bay the Green Way\,” Thursday\, April 16th at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms\, 308 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles from 1:00 – 2:15 p.m. \n\n\n\nDuring the presentation\, you will learn how to implement an IPM system\, why it’s important and what resources are available to help you. Laurel will also share how to: \n\n\n\n\nNurture a resilient garden that requires less work.\n\n\n\nChoose the least harmful management actions.\n\n\n\nDevelop a holistic approach to addressing problems that do arise.\n\n\n\nImprove your observation skills in the garden.\n\n\n\nChoose and use pesticides in the least harmful manner.\n\n\n\n\nLaurel has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and currently coordinates the Master Gardener Program in Clallam County. She acts as a regional IPM specialist in Clallam\, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties. With 25 years in horticulture and botany\, she has educated home gardeners and small farms\, produced native plants for restoration\, and conducted research on ecosystems and agricultural systems. She loves insects and helping others love (or at least understand) them too. Laurel holds a master’s degree in Horticulture Systems with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University.

Find out how fun\, beautiful and beneficial houseplants can be! Join Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green for a special two-hour evening Green Thumb Education Series presentation\, “All About Houseplants: Selection\, Care and Propagation\,” Thursday\, May 7th\, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms\, 308 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles. \n\n\n\nJeanette will talk about how to select\, care for and repot houseplants\, and will share common techniques used to propagate them. She will also give away houseplants that she propagated from her own collection! By the end of this presentation participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nList environmental factors that affect houseplant growth.\n\n\n\nSelect houseplants best suited to the conditions in their home.\n\n\n\nProvide appropriate care to their houseplants.\n\n\n\nRepot a houseplant.\n\n\n\nPropagate their houseplants using commonly used techniques.\n\n\n\n\nJeanette is a houseplant enthusiast\, surrounding herself with indoor plants to chase the blues away. She has been growing (and enjoying) houseplants since her youth\, having learned much about their care from her mother and through self-study. Jeanette has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003\, is an invited instructor and subject matter expert on houseplants for the WSU Green School\, writes gardening articles for local newspapers and is a frequent speaker at Master Gardener and other educational events. She was the 2012 Clallam County Master Gardener of the Year\, has attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners and is a recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. \n\n\n\nThe Green Thumb Education Series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held in person typically on Thursdays from January through May\, and September through November. Find out how you can design your green spaces with native plants to create beautiful landscapes that help local wildlife thrive naturally. \n\n\n\nJoin botanist Dave Allen for a special two-hour evening Green Thumb Education Series presentation\, “Native Plants for Home Landscaping\,” Thursday\, September 10th\, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms\, 308 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles. During the presentation\, Dave will discuss: \n\n\n\n• Creating a habitat in your landscape• Site preparation and planning• Native garden maintenance• Uses of specific native species \n\n\n\nDave has worked in habitat restoration and native plant propagation for over 40 years in both California and Washington. He is a retired Olympic National Park botanist who led the Matt Albright Native Plant Center that helped develop and implement the revegetation portion of the Elwha River Restoration project\, as well as other revegetation projects within the park.
