SUMMARY:Digging Deeper: Garden Bed Construction\, Building an Elevated Planter
DESCRIPTION:Master Gardeners Patty Bacon and Roger Steinert\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGardening should bring enjoyment\, not discomfort. As we age or experience physical limitations\, some gardening tasks can become more challenging. One of the first steps in gardening for life is to make gardening more accessible by bringing the garden up to the gardener. \n\n\n\nPatty Bacon and Roger Steinert\, two talented carpenters\, have built many amazing structures for the Woodcock Accessible Garden\, including elevated beds. On July 11\, starting at 10a.m. Patty and Roger will present a Digging Deeper presentation; they will talk about tools and materials for building planters. They will demonstrate the construction of a small three-by-four cedar elevated planter\, giving tips on planning and proper assembly. To keep it lightweight\, they will use one-inch locally sourced cedar for the bed with a reinforced bottom and sturdy legs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElevated beds are basically raised beds on legs. They are made with a sturdy bottom to support the weight of the soil. The height reduces bending\, and the open space underneath the bed can be designed to allow room for a chair or wheelchair so gardeners can sit comfortably. The depth of the elevated bed should be limited to about 8 to 12 inches. The weight of the soil can be considerable\, particularly when wet. Raised beds are ideal for shallow-rooted crops or flowers. Many\, such as lettuce\, arugula\, spinach\, and strawberries\, can grow in as little as six inches of soil. \n\n\n\nFor added fun\, the finished 3 by 4 elevated cedar planter will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at the conclusion of the program at 11:30 a.m.! Bids will start at $150 (to cover the cost of materials)\, cash\, check\, or credit card will be accepted. \n\n\n\nThe presentation is free and no registration is required. Dress for the weather\, as the program is held outdoors.

SUMMARY:Summer Orchard Care and Pruning
DESCRIPTION:The warm days of summer come with a list of tasks that fruit tree owners need to tackle in order to produce a bountiful harvest of great quality fruit and to keep their trees manageable and in good health. On Saturday\, July 18th from 10-11:30 a.m. the Clallam County Master Gardeners are featuring Summer Orchard Care and Pruning at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden.CCMG Presenters Keith Dekker & Tom del Hotal will open the session with a presentation and Q&A session addressing watering\, fertilizing\, pest control and summer pruning principles. The second portion of the day will take participants into the Woodcock orchard where Tom and Keith will further explain summer pruning and answer questions with hands-on demonstrations on a range of fruit trees. \n\n\n\nPruning in summer is entirely different from winter pruning. Pruning in summer limits growth\, while pruning in winter stimulates growth. Summer pruning keeps the size of fruit trees manageable and their fruits more accessible come harvest time. It also reduces the amount of pruning needed during the winter pruning season and usually creates smaller wounds on the tree. Other summer pruning objectives include repairing damage\, improving light penetration\, and strengthening leggy branches. \n\n\n\nKeith is a 50-year veteran in the field of horticulture\, the last 35 in western Washington. He moved to Sequim from Seattle and became a Master Gardener here in 2017. His experience includes garden centers\, nurseries\, greenhouses and commercial landscape maintenance. \n\n\n\nA Certified Arborist\, Tom began his 40-year career as a horticulturist and nurseryman. For much of that time\, Tom also owned and operated a fruit tree specialty nursery providing orchard design and fruit tree management services. Tom recently celebrated his 5th anniversary as a Clallam County Master Gardener. He also is president of The Olympic Orchard Society. \n\n\n\nThe goal for Summer Orchard Care and Pruning is to bring participants greater knowledge to optimize the growth and productivity of their fruit trees for this season and the longer term. This session is designed to build their confidence in approaching the task\, whether on their own or in hiring a professional. \n\n\n\nMG Digging Deeper presentations are free\, open to all\, no registration required\, so feel free to bring an interested friend or neighbor. Presentations are outdoors\, so dress for the weather.

DESCRIPTION:Master Gardener Pam Pace\, sage of the Culinary Herb Garden at Woodcock Garden\, and fellow Master Gardeners Diane Young and Stephany Neuschaefer are offering a Digging Deeper Presentation about the practice and pleasure of a serious cook’s garden. Pam speaks with years of experience in both gardening and cooking as she describes her favorite herbs\, aromatics\, and specialty vegetables that grow so beautifully in our area. She will provide tips on growing\, harvesting\, cooking\, and preserving these culinary gems. \n\n\n\nGrowing your own fresh ingredients is one of the simplest and most economic ways to practice garden-to-table principles in your own home. A self-sufficient herb garden can inspire you to experiment and take your culinary adventures to the next level. The presentation will include time to tour the Woodcock herb garden and to make herb bundles and sachets to take home. \n\n\n\nVery few things are more rewarding than standing in the middle of your garden and planning your next meal. SUMMARY:Raised Bed Gardening
DESCRIPTION:So Many Advantages and Such Bounty!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaised beds can elevate your vegetable gardening to new levels (in so many ways!). \n\n\n\nAdvantages to growing vegetables in raised beds include better drainage\, warmer soil\, and easier access by the gardener. Another advantage is productivity – through better control of your growing environment\, your season’s results are often more bountiful and more delicious. Who can argue with that? \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, August 15th from 10-11:30 a.m. the Clallam County Master Gardeners will dive into the What\, How\, and WOW of Raised Bed Gardening at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden. This interactive learning opportunity is free to all members of our community. \n\n\n\nThe Raised Bed Gardening team has planned a dynamic experience\, beginning with a presentation and Q&A session addressing types of raised beds\, location and design considerations\, soil preparation\, watering\, mulches\, and various attachments for growing different types of vegetables. \n\n\n\nThe rest of the morning will take participants through the Woodcock raised bed gardens\, where mature produce and earlier-stage plantings are growing side-by-side in various types of framed raised beds and showcasing a range of trellises and season extenders. \n\n\n\nThe Master Gardeners Raised Bed team\, including David Rambin (Golden Trowel Recipient)\, Jennifer Blackwood\, Dave Eberle\, Kelly Pankau\, Diane Young\, and Tom Zingarelli\, have been working steadily to develop the raised bed gardens at Woodcock and are looking forward to sharing their experience with you. \n\n\n\nThe goal for Raised Bed Gardening is to bring participants greater knowledge to optimize the growth and productivity of their vegetable gardens for this season and the longer term\, and to build their confidence in approaching the task\, whether on their own or in hiring a professional. \n\n\n\nMG Digging Deeper presentations are free\, open to all\, no registration required\, so bring an interested friend or neighbor.
